Why Saturated Fat intake is Bad for Your Sperm Count

An array of studies has proved that saturated fats and fatty foods are harmful for the sperm production, motility, and quality, besides causing ailments of the heart. It may also be a contributing factor causing unknown infertility in men. According to Tina Jensen, MD, Ph.D., lead study author at Department of Growth and Reproduction from Rigshospitalet, saturated fats are known to cause various health concerns.

A Danish study linking declining sperm count to saturated fat intake was also confirmed by the research scholars at the Rigshospitalet Copenhagen University National Hospital.

A scholarly study was conducted by the university during 2008 – 2010 by making use of samples from 700 odd Danish men, up for military-checkup. The men were about 20 years old. The research results showcased that sperm count reduction was 38% in men who included saturated fats in their diet regularly. Men who included higher fatty foods showed 41% reduction in the sperm count.

This does not mean that men should remove the saturated fat content of their diet. Limiting its consumption is enough to sustain a good and healthy sperm count. This study categorised the subjects into many groups and published the results in the American Journal of Clinical Nutrition. The results observed that limiting saturated fat consumption to 11% of the total calories maintains a healthy sperm concentration of about 50 million sperm per millilitre of semen, with sperm count in the range of 163 million.

According to the WHO, the normal value of sperm concentration is 15 million sperm per millilitre of semen. The study observed that a small increase in saturated fat consumption by 4% also showed a decline of 5 million sperm per millilitre of semen for the sperm concentration. Also, the sperm count dropped to 128 million, which is again a huge difference which cannot be ignored, even if the count and concentration are well above the normal range.

An earlier study during 2011 conducted by the Brazilian scientists states that a complete diet including fruits and whole grains helps in boosting the sperm production, quality and hence the count. It also aided in elevating the speed and agility of the sperm, thus improving the chances of conception.

Men who want to stay fertile even after the age of 40 should abstain from alcohol and smoking besides limiting the saturated fat intake in their regular food. A regular exercise regime is recommended for maintaining general health.
