What is Impotency as per Ayurveda?

In Ayurveda, impotency is referred to as Viryapata. It is referred to as deficiency or loss of penile strength, semen and senility. The tissues and doshas can get deranged due to various reasons, some of which are given below:
- Performing sex during wrong times or having excess sex.
- Excess masturbation
- Consuming unsuitable food, excess of hot, sour, salty, astringent, bitter or rough food.
- Anxiety, old age, suspicion, grief, anger, fear, exorcism, suppressing natural urges, emaciation from disease, wounds, etc.
These may cause semen defects as it reaches semen-carrying channels. Semen is considered to be normal only when it is white, non-burning, sweet, non-slimy, viscous and oily.
Major causes
Penile weakness: It arises due to consumption of excess salty, sour, unsuitable, incompatible or heavy foods as well as overeating pastries or drinking excess water. The other causes cited are excess consumption of milk or yogurt, meats, irregular meals, weakness from illness, during menses, etc. It may also include excessive discharge, defective tract, chronic illness faced by women, not washing penis after urine, injured genitals, etc.
Defective seed: It arises due to consuming mixed, rough, cold, insufficient, uncooked or incompatible food. It can also be due to grief, fasting, fear, anxiety, sexual intercourse and terror. The other causes cited are suspicion, exorcism, dosha excesses, deficient plasma, applying panchakarma the wrong way, exertion, impaired semen, etc. Such conditions are generally related with weakness, pale complexion, erection difficulty, low vitality, heart problems, jaundice, bronchial asthma, anaemia, vomiting, exhaustion cough, fever, colic and diarrhoea.
Deficiency: It may be arise due to envy, anxiety, fear, grief, excess mental work, agitation, intoxication, curiosity, emaciating diet, habitual rough, insufficient plasma food quantity, etc. Deficiency occurring in dhatus (other tissues) may result in reduced rasa, thus leading to low resistances to various types of diseases.
Senility: There is experienced reduced semen due to old age, associated mostly with deficiency in seven tissues, losing strength, sensory & motor organs, energy gradually, not using aphrodisiacs, poor nutrition, mental and physical exhaustion. It causes debilitation, depleted tissues, poor resistance towards disease and poor complexion.
Ayurvedic treatment offered
Exorcism: There is availed spiritual remedy.
Dosha imbalance: There is suggested ghee, enemas, semen promoting herbs like kapikachhu, bala, ashwagandha and shatavari.
Impotence: Therapies need to be administered like:
- Unction
- Fomentation
- Oil purgative
