A Succint study on Transmission of STDs or STIs

The STDs are also commonly referred to as STIs. The sexually transmitted diseases or the infections are caused when a healthy and normal person gets sexually involved with an infected partner. This requires one to know more about types of sexual intercourses which spread this disease. All kinds of intercourses which necessitate contact with the vagina or anus may spread an STI or an STD. Blow jobs or oral sex is also one of the methods through which the virus enters the system of an otherwise healthy person. Few STIs spread via contact through clothing as well. Listed below are few STIs and their transmission methods.

  • An STI like crab or the pubic lice may spread upon contamination of clothing or linen without the need of sexual involvement.

  • An STI like syphilis spreads upon direct contact with the infected partner.

  • HPV is another type of STI which spreads through sexual contact with an infected partner.

  • A mother infected with an STI may pass it on to the baby during the birthing process.

Who is prone to it?

A person who changes sexual partners frequently without knowing the sexual history of the partner is at a greater risk of contracting an STI.

The only way to minimise the risk of contracting an STI is to maintain a strong, understanding and lasting monogamous relationship with a partner who is equally healthy. If the partner is infected, then maintaining celibacy is the only way to ensure zero probability of an STI transmission.

Does using a condom help?
  • Although condoms are useful for stalling the entry of virus or bacteria responsible for an STI through the seminal or vaginal fluid, common STIs like the HPV may spread through the contact of the skin which is not covered by the condom.

  • The condoms help one stay safe from the STIs like the HIV, gonorrhoea, chlamydia and trichomoniasis.

  • These are useful to some extent in minimising the transmission of infection like herpes, HPV, and syphilis, but cannot guarantee zero probability of transmission.

  • Nevertheless, using condoms help one stay safe from many STIs. This makes it an important preventive measure to be practised when engaging in any kind of genital or sexual intimacy. Every intimacy involving contact with the vagina, penetration via the anus, the practise of oral sex, etc., requires one to use the condoms as safety measures. These must be worn even before pre-ejaculation fluids make an appearance during a sexual act.
