Releasing mature ovum from ovarian follicles to the fallopian tube to fertilize is known as ovulation. The word artava in Ayurveda can be used for shonita and ovulation for ovum. Ayurveda nicely elaborates the ovulation process and the ayurvedic treatment to increase fertility.

Ovulation Based On Ayurveda

As per Ayurveda, vata dosha can be responsible for all the functions of the body. Acharya Charaka finds the importance of vata dosha stating if it’s in the normal state it nourishes and supports the body but vayu imbalances can lead to abnormalities.

Vata vitiation leads to ovulatory dysfunction contributing to 40% of female infertility cases. The menstrual cycle in Ayurveda has 3 phases based on doshas like pitta phase, vata phase and Kapha phase.

The Vata phase starts from the first day period until the fifth day. Kapha phase from the last day of the menstrual cycle up to ovulation (fourth to fourteenth day). Pitta phase is the day of ovulation till the next period.

The downward movement of menstrual blood is caused by Vata dosha. It gets predominated in periods. Endometrium building happens in Kapha dosha. This gives strength and prepares the body for conception. Progesterone hormone is at its peak during the pitta phase. Imbalanced pitta dosha causes premenstrual symptoms.

Infertility And Ovulation

Ambu, ritu, kshetra and bija means fertile period, proper nutrients, healthy reproductive organs and ovum or sperm. Defects in any of these four lead to infertility. Bija relates to the ovulation process and anovulation happens due to the absence of bija. The absence of bija results in imbalances of artava, the main reason for an anovulatory cycle.

Lifestyle disorder imparts anovulatory cycle such as improper food habits and lifestyle leading to vitiation of doshas also mal-absorption obstructing the body channels. Dhatu kshaya and channel obstruction aggravate vata dosha, Kapha and pitta.

The menstrual cycle is diminished by pitta and vata dosha. The menstrual phase can be destroyed due to obstruction at the pathways of doshas in women. A diminished menstrual cycle has symptoms like scanty flow, delayed periods and vaginal pain.

The main symptoms of polycystic ovaries are due to scanty bleeding. Ovulation does not happen in this phase. At least 26 to 44% of female infertility is caused by the ovulatory factor.

Hormonal therapy for inducing ovulation can be costly and comes with side effects. Moreover, ayurvedic medicine for ovulation is recommended. Some herbs can be used as an ayurvedic medicine for ovulation to balance hormones and are highly beneficial to induce ovulation. Herbs don’t cause any side effects and give the best results.
