We have to know about fallopian tubes before understanding their function. Fallopian tubes are artavaha srotas in Ayurveda. It covers the entire female reproductive tract and has functional and structural units of the hypothalamus to the uterus. In Ayurveda, the fallopian tube is known as artava bija vaha srotas as it can carry bija rupi artava.
A part of the female reproductive system is the fallopian tube. It has ‘J’ shaped muscular tubes called salpinx or uterine tubes or oviducts. Fallopian tubes laterally extend from the uterus and open in the abdominal cavity of the ovaries.
Fallopian Tubes Functions
Fallopian tubes are the pathway passages of the ovum from the ovary to the uterus. Oviducts are used for the movement of female gametes. Anatomical structure in the inner part of tubes makes the ovum float in the direction of the uterus and supplies them with nutrients.
Symptoms For Blocked Tubes
Fallopian tube blockage symptoms are not described in ayurvedic ancient texts, as the tubal blockage term is not used in Ayurveda. But their clinical features are understood by taking gynaecological disorders as considerations. Bandhyatva or Infertility can be the chief complaint and it is diagnosed by investigating the tubal blockages. The main symptom of tubal blockage is Bandhyatva.
Symptoms in blockage of fallopian tubes are unknown in women until they face problems getting pregnant. In this case, the blocked tube has mild or continuous pain at one side of the abdomen.
Hydrosalpinx is a type of blocked fallopian. Tube blockage symptoms of this can have vaginal discharge and low abdominal pain. All these symptoms are not experienced by most of the women.
Causes For Fallopian Tube Blockage
Infertility in women is caused by fallopian tube blockages. As per Ayurveda, the cause of blockages is due to vitiation and accumulation of doshas.
Vata dosha can be responsible for the movements of body channels. Accumulation of toxins causes narrowness and dryness of channels, blocking the free movement of vata dosha. The abnormal function or sclerosis of tubes cause tubal blockage.
The main cause of blocked tubes can be pitta dosha. Their functions are metabolism and digestion. Imbalanced pitta dosha leads to inflammation and infections of tubes causing blockage.
Accumulation of pus in tubes obstructs because of vitiated Kapha dosha. Besides doshas, dietary factors like light food, sour, bitter, hot, pungent, salty, sweet, uneasily digestible foods and abhishyandi result in tubal blockage.
Lifestyle changes like fasting, excessive sexual intercourse, excessive workout, injury, trauma, improper vamana, sedentary lifestyle, anger, sleeping in day and suppression of natural urges can lead to blockages in fallopian tubes.
Causes Of Bilateral Tubal Blockages
- Miscarriage
- Abortion
- Ectopic pregnancy
- Abdominal surgery
- Uterine infection
- Ruptured appendix
- Pelvic inflammatory disease
- Surgery near the uterine tubes
- Previous infection like chlamydia
