The motility of sperm is their ability to move efficiently. It is essential for infertility because sperm has to move through the reproductive tract of a woman to fertilize her egg. The poor sperm motility can cause the male factor infertility.
Here, we can look at the sperm impact of motility in terms of fertility, also the causes of poor motility of sperm and ways to improve it.
Sperm motility
Two types of sperm motility makes the individual’s sperm swim. Progressive motility, where the sperm swim in large circles or straight lines. Non-progressive motility where sperm don’t travel in straight lines or circles.
The sperm has to get through cervical mucus for fertilizing a woman’s egg and must have a progressive motility of 25 micrometres in a second.
Asthenozoospermia or poor sperm motility can be diagnosed when it has less than 32% of sperm to move efficiently.
How could it affect fertility?
Sixty to eighty million couples can be affected by infertility and rates differ from country to country. The United States has a rate of around 10% of couples. This infertility is the inability for conceiving after 12 months of trying.
The male factor infertility is an issue where a man’s biology doesn’t make him able to impregnate a woman. Almost 40 to 50% of infertility affects 7% of males.
Male infertility results due to semen’s deficiencies that are common in:
- Oligospermia / low sperm count
- Poor motility of sperm
- Teratospermia / Abnormal sperm shape
90% of male infertility is due to low sperm count and poor sperm motility.
Low motility causes can be:
Their causes vary for low sperm motility and they are unexplained.
- Testicles damage impacts the sperm’s quality
Reasons can be:
- Testicular cancer
- Infection
- Testicular surgery
- Injury
- Undescended testicles
Long-term use in anabolic steroids reduces sperm motility and its count. Drugs like cocaine and cannabis, and few herbal remedies affect the semen’s quality.
Varicocele, which happens when scrotum veins are enlarged and relates to low sperm motility.
