Diagnosing Male Infertility

Male infertility is another contributing factor for failed conception in the modern day couple. In general, the female partner is blamed for failure to conceive. The recent advances have made it possible to ascertain male infertility based on the sperm count analysis. Although this test helps identify the problems related to sperm production, motility or mobility, the actual cause requires further diagnosis. The Ayurveda mentions different types of pariksha (diagnosis) to ascertain if male infertility is a contributing factor.
A typical diagnosis necessitates physical examination of the testes. This helps the physician check for conditions like Varicocele. Tests for sperm count and motility help diagnose the conditions related to faulty spermatogenesis. Tests to probe autoimmune conditions causing infertility may also be recommended. Physical injury to the testes may also cause infertility, called as Vrisanaksepa. Sometimes vitiated Vata also causes this condition. Also, conditions like varicocele may interfere with spermatogenesis by halting the cooling mechanism necessary for sperm production.
Another important factor which causes male infertility is faulty seminal plasma. When the plasma or the medium which transports the sperms in the vagina is not consistent there can be no fertilization. This is known to cause unknown infertility in an otherwise healthy couple. The sperm count and motility parameters may not be able to diagnose this condition. Hence, Ayurveda suggests diagnosis methods like Reto Parikshya. This diagnosis checks various parameters of the semen like the liquification time, viscosity, volume, pH, colour etc., to determine the vitiated Dosha and suggest the line of treatment accordingly.
The Ayurveda suggests such established methods of diagnosis to pinpoint the cause of infertility and hence, correct the Dosha which is vitiated thereby giving sustainable results. Every person does not require a Vajeekarana therapy as a solution to infertility. Sometimes vitiated Kapha or Pitta may be the root cause of the problem. This may be diagnosed based on the colour of the semen. Similarly, diagnosis of the viscosity of the semen helps in suggesting the right kind of herbs for treatment. Male infertility is easier to diagnose, and address using the ancient methods of diagnosis. The causes of oligospermia can be traced to the actual physical or emotional factor causing it and hence be treated effectively. When opting for treatment via the herbal medication, one may have to follow certain food restrictions and adopt healthier lifestyle habits to aid the treatment method. Adhere to the doctor’s advise strictly to observe sustained and long-term positive results.
