Ayurveda defines infertility as the biological inability of a woman of childbearing age to contribute to a pregnancy, or the condition of a woman who is unlikely to carry a pregnancy to term. Modern science says that infertility is the inability to have a child after a year of daily sexual activity without birth control.
Infertility is becoming more and more common these days, and it is taking longer and longer to find a cure that is easy and cheap. Ancient Atharvaveda literature has a lot to say about the importance of treating infertility in Ayurvedic history. When you use Ayurvedic medicine to treat infertility, you get good results.
Causes of infertility
Both men and women come across conditions that lead to infertility. Infertility in women can be caused by factors like the ovaries, the tubes, getting older, uterine problems, PCOS, endometriosis, etc. Many things, like diet, mental instability, too much physical activity, lifestyle, and stress, can change a woman’s menstrual cycle. This is called a Doshas imbalance (control the activities of the body-Vata, Pitta and Kapha).
Male infertility is usually caused by things that make it hard for sperm to be made or moved, like varicoceles, cancers, problems with ejaculation, tumours, hormonal imbalances, tubular defects that make it hard for sperm to move, etc.
Ayurveda says that agnimandya (a change in the body’s digestive fire) and tridosha dushti are the main reasons why the digestive system doesn’t work right (vitiation of three governing factors of the body).
Management of infertility in Ayurveda
Ayurveda promotes health by boosting the body’s own self-healing and balancing processes. It doesn’t rely on anything outside of the body to replace or fix hormones. It focuses on treating infertility as a whole in order to improve the woman’s general health and quality of life.

Ayurvedic herbs
Infertility does not happen by itself. It is a result of another kind of disorder. The herbs used in the procedure then work to get rid of the problem at its source. Herbs like Ashwagandha (Withania somnifera), Shatavari (Asparagus racemosus), and Amalaki (Emblica officinalis) are some of the most well-known and used herbs (Emblica officinalis).
These are very helpful formulas that help the Follicle Stimulating Hormone (FSH) and the Luteinizing Hormone (LH) find a hormonal balance that works well together (LH). There is no one herb that is known to help with fertility on its own. So, to treat infertility, a mixture of herbs is used to fix the biological or physical problem that causes it.
Ayurvedic herbs used in the treatment for infertility:
- Ovulation problem – Ashoka, Dashmoola, Shatavari, Aloe vera, Guggulu, etc.
- Premature ovarian failure (POF) – Ashoka, Dashmoola, Shatavari, Guduchi, Jeevanti, etc.
- Blocked fallopian tubes, adhesions (scar tissue), and pelvic inflammatory diseases-Guduchi, Punarnava, etc.
The right combination of herbs can help regulate menstrual cycles, improve overall health and fitness, revitalise sperm (by improving sperm count, shape, and movement), reduce stress, improve sleep, calm anxiety, give you more energy, balance the endocrine system, and improve blood flow in the pelvic cavity, all of which can help you get pregnant.
