Spices have been considered important and used for ages as supplements to enhance aroma and tang to food, perfumery and medicines. Few popular condiments are green chilly, coriander leaves, lemongrass, mint, ginger, parsley, etc. There are also botanicals like oregano, paprika, cardamom, black pepper which is used as both condiment and spice.

Spices do have nutritional value and India produces about 3 million tonnes annually to earn over $5 billion through export. They are also storehouse of essential micro elements, antioxidants and vitamins. They do offer medicinal properties like:

  • Cardamom considered as queen of spices helps treat diseases of teeth and gum, chest congestion, eyelid inflammation and digestive disorders.
  • Cinnamon barks can treat type 2 diabetes.
  • Cloves help relieve toothaches and provide relaxation to body fatigue.
  • Curry leaves help prevent hair graying.
  • Black pepper mixed with vegetable oil used in aromatherapy can help relieve body stiffness, fatigue, pain and arthritis. Steam if inhaled with eucalyptus oil can cure cold and flu.
  • Turmeric enhances hormonal tissue sensitivity and prevents beta amyloid accumulation in brain patients suffering from Alzheimer’s disease. It has anti-carcinogenic properties and cures pancreatic cancer, multiple myeloma, colorectal cancer and venereal diseases.
  • Chillies when used can help treat sinuses, bronchitis and stabilize various digestive disorders. It also helps dilate blood vessels.
  • Fenugreek is used as anti-coagulant and tonic to cure digestive disorders.
  • Cumin has anti-cancerous and antioxidant properties as well as beneficial digestive indications.
  • Saffron is active stimulant and is of great use.
