Bacterial Vaginosis – A Sneek Peek

Originally posted 2021-09-29 10:13:55.

Bacterial vaginosis is a condition which can affect a woman in any age group. It is more common in the age group of 14 to 44 years. It is quite unrelated to sexual wellness or habits but women who practise promiscuity observe greater outbreaks when compared to women who are in a monogamous relationship. Also, the presence of the BV may increase the chances of contracting another STD. In the case of BV, prevention is always better than cure, because once this condition is visible, future recurrences are known to surface.

Bacterial Vaginosis

This condition occurs when the balance maintained in the vagina pertaining to good and bad bacteria population is disturbed. An imbalance in the bad bacteria population may trigger this condition. It is unknown what causes such an imbalance, but the women who contract this condition may observe the unchecked growth of bad bacteria which causes itching and pungent fish odour to emanate from the vagina.

Know your Symptoms

An abnormal, thin vaginal discharge, grey or white in colour which smells like fish accompanied with a painful or itchy vagina is a sign of Bacterial vaginosis. Burning sensation while urinating is also another symptom to watch out for. This bad odour is prominently observed soon after sex.

Who is at Risk?

Women who have sex with more than one partner are prone to contracting BV. Also, excess use of vaginal products is known to cause an imbalance in the bacteria population. This condition does not spread upon contact or via the use of common toilet seats, beds, swimming pools, etc., but the use of vaginal sprays, washes, douche may increase your risk factor.

A pregnant woman may also observe this condition when the bad bacteria growth is more than good bacteria. A pregnant woman should get herself treated as soon as she observes symptoms of BV as the chances of giving birth to a premature baby are increased due to it.

Diagnosis and Cure

During the diagnosis, the doctor may check the vagina and extract a sample of vaginal fluid to be tested for BV. An antibiotic course may be prescribed by the doctor to check the population of bad bacteria. It is important to abide by the prescription even after the painful symptoms vanish. In some women, this imbalance is corrected on its own accord without any medical intervention. But, it is always better to be safe when it comes to facing STDs.
