Causes for Loss of Sexual Drive & Desire in Women

Women these days are found to lose their sexual desire in surprisingly increasing numbers. Sexual loss yearning is considered to be HSDD (Hypoactive sexual desire disorder). Such dysfunction occurs in women of every age. However, it is more related to reducing hormones, relationship issues, job stress and other issues experienced by women. Decline in sexual drive in women can be due to age & physiological factors.
Some common causes for sexual drive & desire loss in women
Socio-cultural influences: It can be due to peer pressure, job stress & media showing negative images of sexuality.
Interpersonal relationship issues: It can be due to problems affected by partner performance, child birth, lacking in emotional satisfaction in the relationship, etc.
Medical issues: Mental illnesses like depression or some medical conditions like thyroid disorder, fibroids and endometriosis may affect sexual drive in women both physically & mentally.
Low testosterone: Both women & men are affected by this problem. In women, testosterone levels tend to peak during their mid-20s & declines steadily until menopause after which it drops significantly.
Age: Androgen blood levels may continuously fall in women with age.
Medications: Certain oral contraceptives and drugs taken for blood pressure might reduce sexual drive. It may affect blood flow or reduce available testosterone levels.
Sexual desire loss faced by women can be due to combination of psychological & physical factors. Hence, it will require several treatment approaches for curing it effectively. Many females may experience lack of libido, which again is temporary in nature. This is because, the woman’s desire to have sexual intercourse is based upon several complex component interactions that affect intimacy. It also includes emotional & physical well-being, current relationship, lifestyle, beliefs & experiences.
Other reasons for low sex drive in women
Medical diseases: Various non-sexual diseases might affect sexual desire like cancer, arthritis, high blood pressure, diabetes, neurological diseases, coronary artery disease, etc.
Sexual problems: If during sexual intercourse, the woman is unable to orgasm or experiences pain, then it is likely to hamper her sexual desire.
Surgery: If the woman had any type of surgery like the genital tract or breasts, then it can affect her sexual desire, function and body image.
Medications: There are several prescription medications as well as anti-seizure medications & anti-depressants which are libido killers.
