PE Concepts in Ayurvedic Classics: Kama (sex/desire) as per the rich cultural heritage of India is regarded to be among life’s objectives (purusharthas). Ancient erotic literature here is considered to be an art and science, dealing with diverse ‘kama’ aspects including its medicinal, cultural and social significance.

‘Anangaranga’ composed by ‘Kalyana malla’, a sexual treatise deals with different factors during intercourse to achieve optimum sexual pleasure and to offer sexual education. Varying concepts such as class of women to be avoided in sexual relation, describing their different body parts to be stimulated at the time of foreplay to enjoy better gratification and prohibited places to have sex, depending upon lunar cycle of regression and progression is present in Anangaranga. There have been described sexual unions of three types, namely, chirasambhava (long timed), madhyama sambhava (moderately timed) and seeghrasambhava (short timed). Also is described the degree of arousal that tends to vary between persons, depending upon the kriya (stimulation), namely easily aroused (laghu), moderately aroused (madhyama) and late aroused (chriodaya). There are also described several recipes to hasten dravana yogas (female partner) orgasm. Wide range of recipes has been prescribed by Kalyanamalla to help men to delay their ejaculation (sukrastambana). Lord of desire or ‘Kama Deva’ residing place is the human mind. Smarana (Fantasy) is what manifests kama, signifying significance of mind to boost sexual function.

8 factors are found to be responsible for ejaculation as per Ayurveda, namely, tarsha (strong sexual desire), harsha (sexual fantasy, excitement), paicchilya (semen sliminess), saratwat (semen fluidity), anutva (semen automicity), gaurava (semen heaviness), drutatvat marutasya (vata) and pravanabhava (flowing out tendency). If all or anyone of the above factors experiences dysfunction, then ejaculatory impairment is sure occur and ‘drutatvat marutasya’ is crucial. Vata dosha controls ejaculation physiology, while PE is caused by vata vitiation (apana vata specifically). PE had been compared by previous scholars with Ayurvedic pathological entity termed ‘shukragata vata’. Its classic features which denote fast/early ejaculation/PE are ‘pravritti/Atiseeghra pravritti’ and ‘shukrasya sheeghram usargam’.
